Multiple Button Production from a Single Mold with Interchangeable Mold Components

Our comprehensive in-house molding capabilities at ASPEC make us a one-stop shop for industrial and commercial product manufacturers. We work with companies at every stage of the process, from concept and initial design to full production. The quality of our custom injection molding services was exemplified when a client in the electrical industry contracted us to produce multiple push buttons. We developed a design that would use a single mold with interchangeable core and cavity mold inserts. These buttons were produced in 13 different colors, including black, blue, green, yellow, orange, red, and gray. Mold cavities were polished to a mold finish SPE #2 to produce a high luster finish on the button tops. Parts were molded from a 5 ounce shot of polypropylene with dimensions of 1-1/8″ in diameter and 1-3/4″ long. These buttons were molded with uncompromising accuracy, including tolerances of ± 0.005” for the body and + 0.002″/-.000 for the holes.

This project truly showcased our versatility. The top of the button was molded with a blank surface or with graphic symbols; each part could be produced in 4 different lengths; and finally, the different color options, interchangeable molds, and different button styles demonstrated how many styles could be produced from a single mold and inserts. The molding production for this project was completed within 6 weeks and delivered to our customer in Cincinnati, Ohio. Our customer was very pleased with the final results. We now produce 10,000 to 20,000 of these buttons every month.
